King Government votes down paid sick days for Island workers and renoviction protections for tenants

Charlottetown, PE - Today in the PEI legislature, the King government used its majority to vote against two pieces of important legislation that would help Islanders.

Dennis King’s PC government voted against the Green bill that would provide 5 paid sick days to Island workers. Despite the Green caucus presenting strong evidence in favour of paid sick days, as well as costing analysis and feedback from stakeholders, the Conservative government voted as a block against paid sick days.

The PC government then voted against the Green bill that would extend the moratorium on renovictions to better protect Island tenants. This is something that tenants and housing advocates have been calling for in light of low vacancy rates.

“It becomes clearer every day that Dennis King and his government do not care about the very real challenges Islanders are facing,” said Karla Bernard, Leader of the Third Party. “It is incredibly disappointing to see Ministers who are so out of touch with the needs of Islanders vote against these bills. Our caucus will continue to stand up for workers and tenants and put forward good policy that supports everyday Islanders.”
