Green Party announces nominees for District 9 by-election

CHARLOTTETOWN -  The Green Party of Prince Edward Island announced today the two nomination contestants who will go forward to a nomination meeting on May 24th to determine the Green candidate for the upcoming by-election in District 9 Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park.

Dr. John Andrew is a fourth-generation resident of East Royalty who has led a distinguished career as a medical physicist in both PEI and Nova Scotia. During his career he published over 40 research papers, was on the executive of national medical organizations for 14 years, rose to the rank of Full Professor at Dalhousie University and was made a Fellow of the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists.

John Andrew has also been significantly engaged in watershed issues in his community, having helped found the Wright’s Creek Watershed Environmental Committee to restore the Wright’s Creek watercourse, and serves as Director of the Hillsborough River Association and the Hillsborough Area Watershed Co-op.


Dr. Susan Hartley is a clinical psychologist with a practice in Charlottetown. In addition to her work as a psychologist, Susan is known as an educator, a human rights advocate, an active community volunteer, and has served in leadership roles in her profession, including as past President of the Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia. In 2014, she was the recipient of the Psychologists Association of PEI’s Humanitarian Award for her work in starting the CW4WAfghan Atlantic Chapter and raising awareness regarding human rights and psychological health.

Susan Hartley has served on Peter Bevan-Baker’s Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Critic for Health & Wellness since 2016, and was the Green Party candidate for District 2 Georgetown-Pownal in the recent general election.


Green Party members province-wide will have the opportunity to participate in the nomination vote online or in person at a nomination meeting to be held on Friday, May 24th at 7pm at the Hillsborough Park Community Centre.

The Green Party of PEI opened nominations for the upcoming District 9 by-election on April 30th, and, given the short timeline and unusual and sensitive circumstances around this by-election, announced a special process by which nomination applications would be received and assessed.

A date has not yet been set for the District 9 by-election; by law, the by-election must take place no later than July 19th, 2019.
