Green Party announces process and date for District 9 by-election nominations

In anticipation of a by-election writ being issued for District 9 Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park in the wake of the tragic death of candidate Josh Underhay on April 19th, the Provincial Council of the Green Party of PEI has announced a process and timeline for selecting a new candidate to run in District 9.

A nomination meeting will take place on Friday, May 24th at 7pm at the Hillsborough Park Community Centre. All who have been members of the Green Party of PEI for at least 30 days by May 24th will be eligible to vote for the nomination.

The following nomination process has been announced to Green Party members:

Effective immediately, applications to seek the District 9 nomination are being accepted. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, May 7th at 5pm.

Nomination application packages may be requested by writing to [email protected]. This will generate an automatic email response including a link to download a copy of the application package.

Completed nomination packages may be emailed back to [email protected] or dropped off in our mail slot at the Voluntary Resource Centre (81 Prince St) no later than 5pm on May 7th.

Applications will be reviewed by a five-member Nomination Committee appointed by Provincial Council, which includes representation from Josh Underhay's family.

Due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding this nomination, and the very high degree of interest that has already been expressed in seeking it, we have designed a process to help ensure that the choices on the ballot will consist of nomination contestants who a) are found to closely align with the values and spirit that Josh Underhay represented, and b) have what it takes to be elected and be good Green Party MLAs.

Thus, the Nomination Committee is tasked with reviewing all applications and selecting no more than five of the applicants who best meet those criteria to proceed to the nomination meeting.

The Nomination Committee is asked to bring forward its recommendations as to which contestants should proceed to the ballot no later than Friday, May 17th so that this information can be shared with both the contestants and with the membership.

The nomination meeting will take place on Friday, May 24th at 7pm (registration starting at 6:30pm) at the Hillsborough Park Community Centre.
