Happy New Year! Your January Green Party News

35 Green volunteers gathered earlier this month to help strategize for the year ahead.

Happy New Year! We don't know about you, but it sure feels as though we turned a corner straight into a whirlwind of activity as soon as the calendar turned to 2019 - especially in the world of PEI politics. With intensified speculation that the government will one again ignore the fixed election date law and call a spring election, all the parties are ramping up, and the Green Party is no exception. Peter Bevan-Baker wrote a blog about the need to "Be Prepared" close to the beginning of the month.

As you'll see, our "Upcoming Events" section is bursting at the seams this month! There is something for everyone, and we even have your Valentine's Day and St Patrick's Day all planned out for you :-) In the month ahead, you can take go skating, play board games, have a beer, discuss issues and take in a concert with the Greens. We're also excited that federal Green leader Elizabeth May will be back on the Island on February 12th for a Community Forum with Peter Bevan-Baker, so mark your calendar because these opportunities don't come around every day!

Aside from events, there will be a lot of focus on skill-building over the next couple of months. We've launched a series of skill-building webinars for Green Party members and volunteers about everything from graphic design to how to make the most out of Gmail, so we hope you'll take advantage of these webinars and find them useful in your life (both inside and outside the Green Party).

And speaking of, we're going to be recognizing a few of our hard-working volunteers at our upcoming AGM with our first annual Green Party of PEI Volunteer Recognition Awards. Do you know one or more Green Party volunteers you think ought to be recognized with one of these awards? If so, please submit your nominations by January 23rd.

In this newsletter:

  • Upcoming events (lots of them!)
  • Skill-building webinars

The Green Party of PEI has come a long ways in the past few years thanks to many outstanding volunteers!

Please help us recognize some of our hardest-working volunteers with our first annual Volunteer Recognition Awards by nominating people you think are a good fit for any of the awards on offer. For each nomination, please write a few words about why you believe they deserve the award.

The deadline for nominations is January 23rd (by the end of the day).

Vice Article - by Hannah Bell, December 19, 2018. Hannah writes about the partisan attempts to frame the expression of deep concern about PEI's housing crisis as a form of xenophobia.

The Importance of Priorities - by Peter Bevan-Baker, December 20, 2018. Peter writes about the issues that the Office of the Third Party chose to focus on in 2018, and how they arrived at those priorities.

Be Prepared - by Peter Bevan-Baker, January 4, 2019. Peter writes about what his old Cub Scout motto, "Be Prepared", means to him these days as signs point towards an approaching - and potentially historic - election opportunity for the Green Party.

Fixing the System - by Susan Hartley, January 5, 2019. Health & Wellness Critic Susan Hartley asks the questions "What is it we really need when we say we need more doctors?", and "Are there other ways we can help meet those needs?"

"Trust" and the TOSH renovations - by Trish Altass, January 7, 2019. District 23 Green nominee Trish Altass writes about the concerns of parents of TOSH students that they may have been exposed to toxic substances during renovations, and questions how parents can accept the government's urging to "trust" that everything is alright without releasing the detailed findings of the recent Public Health Office investigations.

Seeking Green Policy Research Volunteers

We are currently looking for volunteers who would like to help out with a project to compile policy position taken by Green MLAs in the Legislature. This involves looking through various legislative records including bills, motions, debates, statements and Question Period, and is an important part of our policy development efforts.

If you want to help and don't mind nerding out on policy and legislative proceedings, please get in touch with Jordan Bober at [email protected] with instructions on how to begin!

Are you "technically inclined"?

Are you comfortable using computers, software and internet applications including social media?

If so, we could use your help! In a world in which IT is becoming increasingly pervasive (including in political campaigning), the computer proficiency levels of our volunteers varies, and sometimes all someone needs is a friendly helping hand to teach them a new skill.

If you would be willing to help our Green campaign volunteers and nominees with basic IT skills, we could use your help! Please get in touch with Jordan at [email protected] if you can lend a hand.

Can you lend a hand at our AGM?

Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on February 2, 2019 in New Dominion, and we could use a hand with everything from setting up to cleaning up, from checking people in to helping organize the potluck. If you can lend a hand at the AGM and/or potluck, please contact Jordan Bober at [email protected]
