Lynne Lund, the MLA for Summerside-Wilmot and Opposition Critic for Climate Change, has proposed an amendment to the Climate Leadership Act, an amendment which would align our yearly emissions targets with the those called for by the latest IPCC report: 1.2 megatonnes of CO2 per year by the year 2030 and carbon neutrality by the year 2050. PEI is currently producing approximately 1.8 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
It would seem like plain common sense to have targets based on what science says is needed to keep PEI and the planet safe, but it's not yet clear whether Lund's bill will have enough votes from PC and Liberal MLAs to pass this bill. This non-partisan rally outside the Legislative chamber - right before MLAs return to vote on the bill - is timed to help persuade MLAs still on the fence about climate leadership to cast a vote in favour of honest, realistic targets.
Alignment with the IPCC report is crucial for the health of Prince Edward Island, Islanders and the world. If you support aligning our emissions with the recommendations of climate scientists, come out to the rally and show your support! Afterward we will fill the gallery to watch the evening session. The audio will also be broadcast outside in case there is not enough seating for us all.
